2009: The Year of the ComebackBy
After a tremendous start by veteran Pedro Martinez (2 hits over 7 innings) and a solo shot by monster Ryan Howard, the Phils thought they were on their way back home with a 2-0 lead in the series. But since Andre Ethier — who refused to swing — drew a bases-loaded, two-out walk from rookie J.A. Happ they’l be heading home all knotted up at 1-1.
The trouble began in the eighth with Ronnie Belliard’s bunt single that got past Chan Ho Park and Howard. Russell Martin followed that up with a grounder to Pedro Feliz, who relayed it to Chase Utley, who totally blew it… his throwing error allowed pinch-runner Juan Pierre to score the tying run from the second.
Let’s not forget LA’s brilliant pitching! Vicente Padilla kicked ass for 7.1 innings and let the bullpen do the rest. Hong-Chih Kuo needed only three pitches for the win before Jonathan Broxton worked a perfect ninth for the save. Nicely done.
